Mandibular Gland Secretions as Alarm Pheromones in Two Species of the Desert Ant Cataglyphis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mandibular gland secretion o f two Cataglyphis species were chemically analyzed by combined gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The exudates produced by C. bom bycina consisted of citronellol and geraniol while that of C. nigra contained only geraniol. The reaction of both species to the glandular secretions was alarm and recruitment. While the reaction of C. bom bycina was strong, that of C. nigra was relatively mild.

متن کاملThe Trail Pheromone of the Venomous Samsum Ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis
Ant species use branching networks of pheromone trails for orientation between nest and resources. The current study demonstrated that workers of the venomous samsum ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae), employ recruitment trail pheromones discharged from the Dufour's gland. Secretions of other abdomen complex glands, as well as hindgut gland secretions, di...
متن کاملHeat shock protein synthesis and thermotolerance in Cataglyphis, an ant from the Sahara desert.
The ant Cataglyphis lives in the Sahara desert and is one of the most thermotolerant land animals known. It forages at body temperatures above 50 degrees C, and the critical thermal maxima are at 53.6 +/- 0.8 degrees C for Cataglyphis bombycina and 55.1 +/- 1.1 degrees C for Cataglyphis bicolor. The synthesis and accumulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs) were analyzed in Cataglyphis and compar...

Chemical analyses revealed that in Cataglyphis niger both the hemolymph and the crop contain the same hydrocarbons that are found in the postpharyngeal gland (PPG). On the cuticle, on the other hand, alkanes, and in particular nonacosane, were more abundant than in the PPG. Studies of their biosynthesis in vivo, using intact ants, revealed the presence of newly synthesized hydrocarbons in both ...
متن کاملRAPID COMMUNICATION Solitary Foraging in the Ancestral South American Ant, Pogonomyrmex vermiculatus. Is it Due to Constraints in the Production or Perception of Trail Pheromones?
Several North American species of Pogonomyrmex harvester ants exhibit group foraging, whereas South American species are exclusively solitary foragers. The composition of the secretions of the poison and Dufour glands in the South American species, Pogonomyrmex vermiculatus, were analyzed, and the secretions and their components were tested as trail pheromones in laboratory bioassays. The major...
